DESIGN OF MARINE AQUARIUM WITH METAPHORICAL ARCHITECTURE APPROACH IN BUNAKEN DISTRICT

Abstract

Indonesia, as an archipelagic nation, possesses abundant marine wealth, particularly in coastal areas such as Bunaken District, North Sulawesi. This area is globally renowned for its marine biodiversity and has become a premier marine tourism destination. Recognizing this potential, a facility is needed that is not only recreational but also educational, aimed at increasing public awareness regarding the importance of marine conservation. The design of this marine aquarium aims to present a public space that combines educational, conservation, and tourism functions. The approach utilized is metaphorical architecture—a design approach that symbolically and conceptually interprets marine elements or characteristics into architectural forms and spaces. Through this approach, the design is expected to create a communicative spatial experience that evokes imagination while representing the local character of the Bunaken area. The final design is anticipated not only to serve as a medium for education and preservation, but also to become an iconic marine architectural landmark that is contextual and inspiring.
